Fibroids
Fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths that develop within and around the uterine wall, often emerging during childbearing years. Although generally benign, fibroids can lead to symptoms such as pain, vaginal bleeding, heavy periods, pelvic pressure, painful intercourse, urinary and bowel obstruction, and reproductive challenges in certain women.
The doctors at Coastal Bend Women’s Center will diagnose your fibroids using ultrasound, MRI, or other imaging techniques, and recommend the most suitable treatment based on the size and location of the fibroid.
We may suggest non-surgical, minimally invasive, or surgical treatments to reduce the size of your fibroids.
Treatment options include:
- Medication — Drug therapy may help alleviate heavy bleeding and painful periods, but it will not stop fibroid growth.
- Myomectomy is a procedure to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus. At Coastal Bend Women’s Center, we specialize in this fertility-preserving surgery.
- Hysterectomy — When other options have been unsuccessful, removal of the uterus may be necessary.
