Urinary Tract and Vaginal Infections

Urinary Tract Infections
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection affecting any part of the urinary system, such as the bladder, urethra, or kidneys. These infections are typically caused by bacteria that commonly originate from the digestive tract or rectal area.
Standard medical treatment for a UTI typically involves a three-day course of antibiotics. If your UTI is sexually transmitted, your partner will also need treatment. For recurrent infections, you may be referred to a specialist for further evaluation and management.
Vaginal Infections
- Vaginal infections, also known as vaginitis, can cause discharge, irritation, and pain during sex and urination. Three types of vaginal infections are the most common.
- Vaginal yeast infection, also known as vaginal candidiasis, is caused by an infection involving an overgrowth of fungus or yeast.
- Bacterial vaginosis is caused by an overgrowth of certain types of bacteria.
- Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite.
Many women may misidentify their symptoms as a yeast infection and attempt self-treatment with over-the-counter medications, when in reality, they have a vaginal infection requiring antibiotic therapy. At Coastal Bend Women’s Center, our gynecologists offer accurate testing for a precise diagnosis, followed by appropriate treatment to expedite your recovery.
