Abnormal Uterine Bleeding
The doctors at Coastal Bend Women’s Center are here to support you with compassion and expertise when dealing with challenges such as abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB).
For most women, menstrual periods last from three to five days and occur in cycles ranging from 21 to 35 days. Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) refers to irregular vaginal bleeding that happens outside of normal menstrual periods. This includes bleeding between periods, heavy menstrual flow lasting longer than usual, bleeding after sex, and bleeding after menopause.
AUB has many possible causes, including:
- Endometrial polyps, a growth that attaches to the inner lining of the uterus
- Adenmyosis, a condition in which tissue grows on the muscle wall of the uterus
- Neoplasia, which is abnormal tissue growth
- Fibroids and blood clotting disorders
- Blood clotting disorders and other medical issues (then remove and blood clotting disorders from the bullet point above with fibroids)
In more serious cases, AUB may be caused by a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy (when an embryo grows outside the uterus), or uterine, cervical or vaginal cancer.
Diagnosis and Treatment
All women with abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) are initially screened for cervical cancer using a Pap smear. Your doctor may also order blood tests to check hormone levels and rule out specific blood disorders.
Treatment options for abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) depend on its cause. Hormonal medications and birth control pills can help control abnormal bleeding and regulate your periods. Additionally, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen can be effective treatment options.
If you have polyps or fibroids, surgical removal may be necessary. In more severe cases, your doctor might recommend endometrial ablation, a procedure that uses a laser or heat to destroy the uterine lining. This causes scarring and healing, which can reduce or stop abnormal bleeding. If hormone therapy and ablations are ineffective, a hysterectomy might be considered.
